Why should you make the effort to vote? The Chatter:
You may have heard…..you are only one person….and your votes don’t count for much….. OR …..Why should you make the effort….the candidate you like never wins anyway!
The Reality:
EVERY VOTE MAKES A DIFFERENCE in City of Tybee elections!
In the last election (2009) -- out of 2,662 registered voters, 1,360 voters decided the election for Mayor and six City Council members.
• 860 voters elected Shirley Sessions as Mayor Pro Tem – giving her more votes than any other city council candidate. • The other five City Council winners received from 640 votes to 819 votes…..a difference of only 179 votes. • Jason Buelterman was elected Mayor (with no opposition) with 1,163 votes. • Four of six incumbents (Charlie Brewer, Barry Brown, Eddie Crone, and Dick Smith) were defeated. • Incumbent Dick Smith was defeated (611 votes) because 29 fewer people voted for him than for Frank Schuman (640 votes). • AND….despite the talk about the tendency to ‘start over’ with each new council, the voters on Tybee made changes but still elected two incumbents (Paul Wolff and Wanda Doyle) and two non-incumbents who had served in prior years (Shirley Sessions and Kathryn Williams) – a total of four members on the ‘new’ council came with experience.
